Internet Statistics Summary Report 2008 – Pingdom

Website monitoring service Pingdom has updated its blog to include a broad summary of global 2008 Internet statistics. The results make for an interesting read and highlight details such as how 53.8 trillion junk email (SPAM) messages were sent last year accounting for 70% of all mail.

EU sees broadband role in economic recovery

The European Commission’s recently announced Recovery Plan includes a €5 billion injection of unspent EU funds “to improve energy interconnections and broadband infrastructure”.

SMEs would change their ISP for better reliability

The latest independent survey carried out by Shape the Future Ltd, has revealed that 72% of businesses would change provider if their Internet connection became unreliable. Furthermore, 85% stated that the level of support was the most important criteria when choosing an ISP, with 80% considering UK based support to be very important.

Free Wi-Fi is now available at St Pancras International station. The ‘most technologically advanced station in the world’ now includes a new Internet Lounge, where travellers can access the Internet using their laptops or PDAs.

61% of all Upstream Internet Traffic is P2P

Sandvine, best known for manufacturing the hardware that slowed down BitTorrent users on Comcast, has released an Internet traffic trends report today. The report shows that, on average, P2P traffic is responsible for more than half of the upstream traffic, but mostly the report seems an attempt to sell their traffic shaping products.
